arruffchiere - robber shop (scroll down for english=

---

Ok, this is not going to be a very deep post. Bur for god's sake! 24$ for having my hair done seems quite an interesting subject to me! 24 dollars! hair 14$, goatee trimming 6$, tip 4$. It is not that I am particularly demanding when it comes to my hair. Uniform clipping of hair, sideburns and beard. Needed time 7 minutes and no need for shampoo, shaving cream, grease or whatever.
And the tip?!?!
I like tipping waiters. I like the idea of keeping things separated, one thing is the food and another other the service. And I think it works, rude waiters are rare.
But having your hair done is already a service! what's the tip for?
Mystery

I thought I would have been cheaper to go to the barber shop than buying an hair clipper... I may have been wrong. Right now I am even, I only hope I won't need another visit to the barber shop.

oh mio (figurativo) dio - oh my (figurative) god (scroll down for english)

Prepariamoci.

A movie you cannot miss: expelled.
I cannot understand if it is a hoax or what, but I am afraid not. It is a documentary in which the claim to show that creationists are bullied by darwinists!
They call in Galileo, like him, they say, they bring new, revolutionary ideas that are not accepted by the establishment...
revolutionary... it is revolutionary to call intelligent design what was called creationism? Creationism has been around for centuries there is nothing new.
They appeal to freedom. Good, I am for freedom of expression. They must be free to say whatever they want, but science is not democratic. Science is based on the method and if you don't follow it, you are free to express yourself. Not scientifically.

Watch out! Usually what happens in the USA finds a way to Europe in a couple of years. Get ready!

l'amara verità - the bitter truth (scroll down for english)

Note to film and TV producers: science grad students work for peanuts. Buy one.

In an interesting article by Ars Technica on science in movies it is said:
Note to film and TV producers: science grad students work for peanuts. Buy one.
have never seen so much truth in so few words.

Ok ok, I admit it, today I am procrastinating, but once again my advisor postponed our meeting. I have been her for two months and I have met him twice.

complotto - conspirancy (scroll down for english)

Two more gone... yesterday I found out that on Saturday one of my roommates proposed to his girlfriend. It happened while I was in the kitchen cooking a delicious Eritrean chicken and they were in the dining room eating clams and mussels.
I heard something was happening, but I naively thought it was a bad mussel... instead it was a ring... with no LED this time.

una grande estate per la scienza italiana - a great summer for italian science (scroll down for english)

I primi hanno scritto l'illuminante articolo: Down subjects and Oriental population share several specific attitudes and characteristics.

Down subjects adore having several dishes displayed on the table, and have a propensity for food which is rich in monosodium glutamate.
mmm dovrò iniziare a contare i miei cromosomi perchè avere una tavola imbandita davanti mi fa un certo effetto. Soprattutto quando sono affamato.
The tendencies of Down subjects to carry out recreative-rehabilitative activities, such as embroidery, wicker-working, ceramics, book-binding, etc., that is renowned, remind [us of] the Chinese hand-crafts, which need a notable ability, such as Chinese vases, or the use of chopsticks employed for eating by Asiatic populations.
Down persons during waiting periods, when they get tired of standing up straight, crouch, squatting down, reminding us of the ’squatting’ position … They remain in this position for several minutes and only to rest themselves. This position is the same taken by the Vietnamese, the Thai, the Cambodian, the Chinese, while they are waiting at a bus stop, for instance, or while they are chatting.
There is another pose taken by Down subjects while they are sitting on a chair: they sit with their legs crossed while they are eating, writing, watching TV, as the Oriental peoples do.

---

I have never quite got the Italian habit of shutting down an entire country for the summer; but after all it is not such a bad idea. Especially when the results of those who keep on working are these.

In the last few weeks thanks to Ben Goldacre at Bad Science, I found out the works of Federica Mafrica and Vincenzo Fodale from the University of Messina and of V. Elia, E. Napoli e R. Germano from the University Federico II at Naples.

The former have written the bright paper Down subjects and Oriental population share several specific attitudes and characteristics. The paper is published on a medical journal with the compelling title Medical Hypotheses. The goal of the paper is to underline the fact that Down subjects and oriental people share some common features, such as:
Down subjects adore having several dishes displayed on the table, and have a propensity for food which is rich in monosodium glutamate.
mmmm I think I should start counting my chromosomes then... I love having several dished displayed on the table. Especially when I am hungry.
It is great that this observation come from two Italians, after all Italians have never been really good at handcraft, right?
Down persons during waiting periods, when they get tired of standing up straight, crouch, squatting down, reminding us of the ’squatting’ position … They remain in this position for several minutes and only to rest themselves. This position is the same taken by the Vietnamese, the Thai, the Cambodian, the Chinese, while they are waiting at a bus stop, for instance, or while they are chatting.
I have always wanted to be able to squat in a comfortable way. In order to rest I need a chair. I think that being able to squat (if really it is a genetic feature and not cultural) is actually an evolutionary advantage.
There is another pose taken by Down subjects while they are sitting on a chair: they sit with their legs crossed while they are eating, writing, watching TV, as the Oriental peoples do.
If they had seen me sitting before I got a Stokke chair they would have hospitalized me or deported as an illegal alien.

The summer is long and so V. Elia, E. Napoli e R. Germano, instead of heading to Ischia and have fun at the beach, wrote: The ‘Memory of Water’: an almost deciphered enigma. Dissipative structures in extremely dilute aqueous solutions, published on the scientific journal Homeopathy. Yes I know... it does feel strange to use the word science and homeopathy in the same phrase without the words IS NOT. Here the subject is more technical so I'll try to summarize it. Homeopathy is based on the use of a diluted active principle. The thing is that it is so diluted that you have a good change of not having a single molecule of the principle in the drug. And that's good since homeopathic active principles are often toxic. This fact should be enough to debunk the whole homeopathy thing. Instead, Homeopathy practitioners reference to a work published in 1988 by Benveniste on Nature in which he claimed that water has memory. Meaning that water somehow can remember the features of a susbtance that has been removed from it - right what homeopaths need. Too bad that the following experiments failed to replicate the phenomenon described in the paper. This summer the "prestigious" Homeopathy Journal devoted an entire issue on the memory of water. Among the authors we find Elia, Napoli e Germano. The whole paper can be read at Bad Science.

I am not a chemist and therefore I cannot critique the method; what I can do is comment on the fact that there is no method.
In their methods section, the authors do not refer to their experimental procedures; they do not say anything about how the samples were prepared or how the pH was measured. Nothing.

The basis of the scientific method is repeatability of experiments. If experiments are not described in details there is no science, because there is no repeatability.

What really strikes me is that both journal are published by Elsevier, what I thought to be a respectable editor. Maybe I should start reconsidering my aim at publishing on Automatica.

I would like to apologize to all the other Italian researchers who spent their summer working and who surely deserve more publicity that those people.

confronti - comparisons

quadrati - square minded (scroll down for english)

---

Today my home internet connection is more down than up. It is always like that on Saturday, which, incidentally, is the day when I need it the most. The day when I try to keep some contact with Italy.

Yesterday I have been to a career counselor, I was seeking some advice on how to face a job interview in the USA (obviously this happened before finding out of the two years rules)

The counselor was a girl named Drew, she is younger than me and has recently obtained a M.A. in Student Personnel Psychology (I don't even know what it is). Overall it was a nice and interesting meeting. The only thing is that I kept only thinking "and they accuse us engineers to be squared-minded"
Here are some examples:
1) I know that it may difficult for anybody used to the anglosaxon college system to come to term with the fact that I have a master of science without officially having a bachelor degree, but after I took 5 minutes to explain her why this is the case, I though everything was settled. At the end of that part of the meeting, while going over my CV, Drew said "this part is fine, but remember to write your bachelor information"... gaaaaaaaaa... "yeah you are right I don't know how I could forget such an important part..."
2) "Put all the dates on the right hand side, it is more professional" - " mmm why?" - "well because it si more professional" - "holy cow! you are right! I should have known".
3) "Here, instead of writing that you have experience as Windows system administrator write that you know how to use Word, Excel and Powerpoint. It is more specific". gaaaaaaa ok, this is not being squared minded, it is plain ignorance. I shouldn't mock her, after all I don't know many things about student personnel psychology.
4) At the beginning of the meeting I explained that I wasn't about to apply for any position, I just wanted some general advice. I sent her the "master copy" of my CV and that when I apply for a position I prune it down so to leave only the relevant things. For all the meeting she kept on asking me about the job I was applying for, saying that the CV like that was to general...

then... who is squared minded?

no post-doc for you, matteo (scroll down for english)

La two years rule.

la two year bar.

--

The fact that I came to Minneapolis to do some "networking" in search of a post-doc position was not a secret. I had a plan, a well designed plan. Destined to failure; I found out today.
I am planning a short trip to canada and I went to the international student office to make sure I had everything I need. Since I was there I asked some general information on visas. I found about the existence of this two rules:

The two years rule. Once you terminate your J1 status as a scholar before being able to come back to work to the US you have to spend two years in your home country. It is not enough to stay out of the US, it must be your home Country.

The guy also gave me a good piece of news: only 50% of post-doc positions are considered jobs, the other half are considered as scholarly positions and therefore they go with the J1 status. "it's not that bad - I thought - I only have to find a scholar status post-doc position".
But the guy added:

"There is another rule"

The two year bar. Once you finish a period as a J1, before being able to initiate another J1 two years must pass. These two years can be spent outside your home country.

Once I finish my J1 period, I will more or less one year from graduation; so I see it difficult to come back to the US any time soon.

Dammit!

PS. a surpriZe to who recognize the citation in the title

cotta scientifica (versione gay) - scientific crush (gay edition)

"viene a vedere ci gira frogger".

The guy in the picture is Burt Rutan. He is not a scientist, but an engineer. An engineer like they are supposed to be, an innovator. His is the courage behind SpaceShipOne, the first civil vehicle which completed with success a suborbital flight. I have heard him at a conference. His a stubborn and a dreamer. He wants space flight to be a business and he's doing it. To those who ask him "why? just to send some billionaire in space?" he replies:
I bought my first apple computer in 1978, and I bought because I could say "i got a computer at my house and you don't" "what do you use it for?" "come over it does frogger".
Videogames gave birth to a industry that today we see as necessary.

Where are people like him in Italy? Where is our ability to dream? It is not matter of money, but how it is spent. Our history is full of dreamers and innovators, but also our recent past. Before WWII Italian aeronautical industry was one of the most advanced in the world, and now? I am not sure, but I suspect that the "State which takes good care of all us" has some responsibility. A safe job that we cannot lose, granted pension and universal health care... all these things killed our ability to risk. Without risk no great thing can be achieved.

Now things are changing, but we need to stop to be jealous of the past generation. We need to do our things our way.

I know that this is an oversimplification, but dreams must be simple.

I've always known that Americans are far ahead. Where have you seen such a toy in a public park elsewhere?

Now I know what I want for Christmas.

I took the picture at a Thai culture festival. Great food, nice traditional costumes, amazing martial arts... but please spare me the music! It is a torture.

cotta scientifica - scientific crush (scroll down for english)

Su dai Annalisa non essere gelosa, scherzo.

The person depicted in the photography is Emily Oster and she is a professor at the University of Chicago. She is an economist. Lately I have seen one of her conferences and I was struck. If you have 20 minutes, you should watch it. She presents the AIDS problem from a new perspective and she made me change my mind: Economics can be useful. I have done some research and I read some of her papers. She is very smart she has an intelligence I like to define sharp. She a Scientist and she is able to look at thing independently. Non many people can do that. Not that I agree with everything, I do have some questions... after all I don't live to far from Chicago, I could go and visit her.

I could also write about the fact that a young girl like her would probably be at some costumer care center in Italy, but I'm trying to be optimistic, today.

Unluckily she is married... :-)

Spettabile redazione del corriere.it;

"in properly controlled, blind studies, where the handwriting samples contain no content that could provide non-graphological information upon which to base a prediction (e.g., a piece copied from a magazine), graphologists do no better than chance at predicting... personality traits...." ["The Use of Graphology as a Tool for Employee Hiring and Evaluation," from the British Columbia Civil Liberties Association].

Distinti saluti

I am attaching below the letter I just sent to corriere.it, the online edition of the most important Italian newspaper:

Dear corriere.it;
I am writing again to underline the sloppyness that characterizes many articles in your science and technology section. In the article "Un software anti-bullismo. Parola di studenti" the author refers to graphology as a science. I'd like to remind the author that
"in properly controlled, blind studies, where the handwriting samples contain no content that could provide non-graphological information upon which to base a prediction (e.g., a piece copied from a magazine), graphologists do no better than chance at predicting... personality traits...." ["The Use of Graphology as a Tool for Employee Hiring and Evaluation," from the British Columbia Civil Liberties Association].
When should I expect an article about the "intelligent design science"?

I don't think it is my duty to remind you that, as one of the most important newspaper in Italy you have the responsibility to shape the public opinion. Don't be surprised if the Italians are scientifically illiterate.

Respecfully yours

sui valori cristiani - on Christian values (scroll down for english)

Mele: «Siamo allo scempio generale.

Comandamento numero 6: Non commettere atti impuri.
Comandamento numero 9: Non desiderare la donna d'altri.
Comandamento numero 8. Non dire falsa testimonianza.
Qui siamo davanti all'infrazione di 3 comandamenti su 10.

Giudicheranno i miei elettori. Ah e a proposito...

Probably many of my English speaking readers haven't heard anything about Cosimo Mele. Well, long story short; Cosimo Mele is congress man for a political party (UDC) which is close to the Catholic Church. Lately the party has been very active against a law that would recognize some right to homosexuals couples and it, among other parties, was able to have it rejected. Anyway, Cosimo Mele admitted he had sex with a prostitute (somebody says there were two prostitutes).
I generally don't care about politicians personal life, as long as they don't care about mine.

Up to when Mele admitted he had sex with a prostitute, the story may have taken place anywhere in the world. The Italian absurdity kicks in after that. Instead of saying something like "ok, he made mistake, his behavior is not admissible under the values that UDC protects" they felt the urge to add how difficult it is to live far from one's family and that after 6 days (!) one starts to feel lonely and that Mele's behavior was therefore comprehensible.

I know a couple of things about being far from my beloved ones. Knowing a couple of things doesn't mean the I work in Rome 3 days a week for a gazillion of Euros when my family lives in Milan. It means that I have been far from my family and princess for a year and a half. I lived in a foreign country where at first I didn't know anybody.
It is true, it can be difficult, but I have never thought about going with a prostitute. Not because "it is wrong and I would go to hell", simply because a prostitute cannot give me what I miss. What I miss are chat and intimacy, and I don't think prostitutes are trained to offer that kind of service. They offer sex, but the need for sex can be quenched with other means (oh I forgot that is a sin too)

But it is not over yet, Mele tried to defend himself. From an interview published by la stampa

Mele: « I didn't do anything but going out for dinner with a friend of mine who introduced me this girl. Since it was late, she went to bed with me.».

Oh yes! it always happens "oh look! it is late, let's go to bed together" "sure! I met you only 5 minutes ago, but it is so late how can I say no". Actually there is not need to ask, the very fact that it is late entails that she is going to bed with you. Come on, seriously, but do these people listen to what they say! I don't care about the prostitute, he is a politician somebody should have taught him logic!

Journalist:
You will agree with me that your Party has embraced the cause of the Roman Church in defense of family values.

Mele: «do you think that the congress men of my party don't make love? Sure I believe in Christian values, but what does having sex with a prostitute have do to with Christian values? It is a personal thing.».

WHAT DOES HAVING SEX WITH A PROSTITUTE HAVE TO DO WITH CHRISTIAN VALUES?!?! what the hell is wrong with this guy?
Commandment number 6: Thou shalt not commit adultery
Commandment number 8: Thou shalt not bear false witness
Commandment number 9: Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wifepuri.

Here I can count at least 3 broken commandments. I am confused, some Christian can please explain me what are the so called Christian values? Seriously I don't know.

But the worst thing is that after such an absurd answer, I was expecting the journalist to question him about Christian values, instead:

Journalist:
Do you remember when the government spokesperson was photographed talking with a transexual?

Wait a second... the journalist just change subject! This is Italian journalism, at its finest hour!

Journalis:
Did you pay the girl?
Mele: «I can guarantee that she didn't asked anything. I gave her a present, spontaneously....».

Right, a present, in cash, spontaneously, after having sex with her. Come on! who has never gave cash to his girlfriend after sex. Nothing says "I love you" as some cash!

I really don't get it, couldn't he have just said "it is true, I went with a prostitute, in Italy this is not a crime, so let's stop with this waste of time and let's get back to work. By the way it is clear now that the whole story of Christian values in Politics must come to a stop"

PS: the journalist who made that interview is Gino Ruotolo. He should win the Pulitzer.
