No, non un altro. Vi prego! Ho appena scoperto che al festival del cinema di Roma è stato presentato un documentario che vuole confutare la tesi ufficiale sui fatti del 11 Settembre 2001. Il film si intitola "Zero, inchiesta sull'11 settembre". Sul sito ufficiale del film non ho trovato nessuna informazione sui contenuti del film, ma immagino che propongano le solite tesi:
1) Le torri sono state demolite e non crollate a causa dell'urto
2) Il pentagono non è stato colpito da un aereo ma da un missile
3) Il quarto aereo è stato abbattuto
e via così... Per quelli che non lo sapessero un documentario del genere è giù stato prodotto, si intitola loose change; fortunatamente Markyx si è premurato di rilasciare una versione commentata "screw loose change" in cui vengono confutate tutte le fantasiose tesi dei complottisti - con fatti e riferimenti. Consiglio caldamente la visione.

Come al solito gli Italiani arrivano in ritardo. Su tutto. Ed ecco Zero... spero ardentemente che sia qualcosa di più originale di loose change. Sarebbe imbarazzante per gli autori riproporre le tesi che sono già state smentite da qualcuno. Ma le parole di Dario Fo (che vi ricordo essere un premio nobel) non promettono nulla di buono:

Quest'uomo è una vergogna per l'istituzione dei premi nobel. Ovviamente nell'intervista non viene fatto riferimento alle tesi specifiche. No, bisogna prima andare a guardare il film e pagare il biglietto. Se tanto mi da tanto, Fo sostiene anche che il programma Apollo sia stata una messa in scena. Che tristezza.

No, please, not again! I have just found out that a bunch of Italian 9/11 truthers have released a new documentary. The title is "zero an investigation on 9/11". On the official website of the movie, I could not find any specific information on the thesis that the movie sustains, but I guess they go for the usual nonsense:
1) The towers were demolished and didn't collapse because of the planes
2) The pentagon was not hit by a plane but a missile
3) The forth plane was shot down
and so forth... For those of you don't know it, a documentary of this sort, "loose change", has been already released. Luckily Markyx took care to edit an annotated version "screw loose change", in which all the truthers' theses are confuted - with fact and references. I suggest you to watch that movie.

As usual Italians come last. I really hope that the writers of Zero wrote something more original than loose change; it would be awkward to foster theses that have already proved false. Dario Fo's (who, I'd like to remind, is a nobel laureate) words are not very encouraging:

[the official version] seems a bullshit written by a general. Since Kennedy's assasination, I have written four plays based on the incredible explanations, offense to the people's intelligence, given by the US government on certain events.

This man is an embarrassment to the Nobel prizes. Obviously he does not elaborate on the specific thesis; you have to buy the ticket for that. That is so sad.

Chicago (scroll down for english)

Lo scorso fine settimana sono andato Chicago. Non immaginate quanto sia stato bello tornare a casa... Tra tutte le città che ho visitato e in cui ho vissuto (ben non molte queste ultime) Chicago è l'unica che è riuscita a catturarmi. Sì, Minneapolis sa essere bella, ma se dovessero dirmi "per i prossimi 5 anni vivrai a Minneapolis" non mi ecciterei più di tanto; se dovessero dirmelo con Chicago farei i salti di gioia. Senza considerare che a Chicago ho lasciato anche degli ottimi amici e rivederli è stato bello.

Ma il vero prodotto tipico di Chicago, il campo in cui nessuna delle città che conosco la batte sono i pazzi! Da nessuna parte ci sono pazzi come ce ne sono a Chicago.

In meno di 4 ore dal mio arrivo ho incontrato 3 pazzi scatenati. Nell'ordine.

1) Ragazza sulla trentina con orsacchiotto che gridava oscenità e altre cose che mi sono sfuggite correndo avanti e indietro per la banchina del metrò. Battento i piedi per terra.

2) Uomo sulla cinquantina, a prima vista normale, incontrato sulla metropolitana. Ad un certo punto prende il cellulare e chiama un fantomatico Generale. Spiega con calma come il nemico li sovrasta numericamente, che ha dovuto aggirare il fiume passando per il promontorio di belmonte (stavamo proprio in quel momento passando la fermata di belmont). Commosso chiede rinforzi al generale, chiede solo 6/7 volontari, ma vuole che a questi volontari si dica che le probabilità di sopravvivere alla missione sono scarse. Concitamente ripete al generale che la situazione è grave, ma che cercherà di fare il meglio per venirne fuori. Ringrazia il generale e interrompe la comunicazione.

3) Donna sulla quarantina, in una cafe dove stavamo facendo colazione. Entra questa coppia, normalissima all'aspetto, se non che la donna porta una marionetta sulla mano (di quelle da ventriloquo). E non se la toglie per mangiare. Non riesco a vedere se nutre anche alla marionetta.

Last weekend I went to Chicago. You can't imagine how great it was to be back at home... Among all the cities that I visited and lived in (not so many in the latter category) Chicago is the only one which captured me. Yes, Minneapolis is a nice city, but if they told "for the next 5 years you will live in Minneapolis" I would not be excited, but if I was told the same thing for Chicago I would be jumping on the table. Without taking into account that I left some great friends in Chicago.
But the real great thing about Chicago, the field where no other city can beat it, are the crazy people. No other city has crazy people like Chicago.

In less than 4 hours since I got there I met 3 wackos. In order.

1) Girl in her thirties with teddy bear, yelling obscenities while running up and down the EL station.

2) Man in his fifties, normal outlook, met on the train. Suddenly he makes a call on his phone, he calls a general. Calmly he explains that the enemy outnumbers him and that he had to go around the river through belmonte ridge (we were passing belmont station at that point). He asks for back up; a few men, only 6 or 7 volunteers, but they must be told that it is going to be a suicide mission. He explains that the situation is critical, but he is going to face it and he will try to come out of it. He thanks the general and close the phone.

3) Woman in her forties, met in a cafe while having brunch. A couple enters the cafe, they look normal if not for the woman who is wearing a hand puppet. She does not take it off to eat. I wasn't able to see is she fed the hand puppet.

Oh how I missed Chicago.

Oggi vi parlo di una iniziativa dell'ADI (Associazione Dottorandi e Dottori di Ricerca Italiani). L'iniziativa, che va sotto il nome di "se potessi avere mille euro al mese", ha come obiettivo l'innalzamento della borsa di dottorato dagli attuali 811 euro al mese (pagati ogni due mesi) ai mille euro al mese del nome dell'iniziativa. E' bene ricordare che l'ultimo ritocco delle borse di dottorato risale al 1998.
Io ho firmato per l'iniziativa; anche se devo ammettere di non essere completamente d'accordo. In particolare non capisco perchè l'ADI voglia che la borsa sia garantita a tutti i dottorandi. Attualmente ogni anno, gli atenei offrono un certo numero di posti coperti da borsa, ma anche uno numero (di solito minore) di posti non coperti da borsa. Forse che l'ADI creda che, nel momento in cui tutti i posti devono essere coperti dalla borsa, il numero di posti offerti rimanga invariato? E' ovvio che non sarà così; rimarranno solo i posti coperti da borsa. In questo modo non si farebbe altro che togliere una possibilità in più. L'ADI non può aver fatto un errore di valutazione così stupido, deve esserci dietro qualche cosa... che però mi sfugge.
Un'altra considerazione che vorrei fare è sull'uniformità della borsa. Attualmente (e l'ADI non ha intenzione di chiedere di cambiare questa cosa) tutte le borse di dottorato sono identiche. Io trovo discutibile che uno specializzando in medicina prenda quanto un dottorando in ingegneria, e che un dottorando in ingegneria prenda come un dottorando in filosofia. Lo specializzando in medicina ha molte più responsabilità, per non contare i turni. Questo è innegabile, più discutibile è la differenza tra il dottorando in ingegneria e il dottorando in discipline umanistiche. Lo so che a qualcuno la cosa non piacerà, ma secondo la mia esperienza il dottorando in ingegneria ha molti più impegni del dottorando in materie umanistiche.
Mi rendo conto che questa ultima proposta non potrà mai essere approvata; sarebbe discriminatoria. Io però non vedo nulla di male nel discriminare, purchè questo non avvenga sulla base di sesso, razza, religione e credo politico... beh discriminare sulla religione non sarebbe male. Ma purtroppo non si può. Dopo tutto io vorrei sapere se uno dei miei studenti crede che Cristo sia nato da una donna vergine o se crede a qualunque altra forma di magia.

Today I would like to write about an ADI (the Italian Graduate Student Syndicate) initiative. The campaign aims at increasing the PhD scholarship from the current 811 euros a month to 1000 euros a month. It should be noted that the amount of the scholarship has not be changed since 1998.
I subscribed to the campaign; but I do not agree on everything the ADI is proposing. Specifically I don't understand why the ADI is pushing for complete coverage of all students. Right now, each University offers a number of funded positions, but also a number of non funded positions. The ADI executives cannot be so stupid to think that, whenever all the position must be funded, the number of available positions will remain the same. Universities will simply cut the non funded positions; thus limiting the choice for some students. They cannot be so naive, there must be something to it; but I cannot get a grasp on it.
Another thing I would like to comment on is the fact that all scholarships are the same. It is absurd that a PhD student in Medicine, with all his or her responsibilities and the shifts, earns as much as a PhD student in engineering; and that an engineering student is paid as much as a philosophy student. The former difference in evident, and I think that nobody can negate that. I admit that the latter is more subjective; but from my experience I can tell that engineering students work harder than humanities students.
I know that my proposal will never be taken into consideration; it is discriminatory... but I do not see anything wrong in discriminating, as long as it is not done on race, sex, religion and political views basis. Well it would be nice to discriminate on religion basis, but we are not quite there yet. After all in science I think I would like to know if one of my students believes that Christ was born from a virgin woman, or in any other magical stuff.

Oggi il corriere riporta la notizia secondo la quale il ministro Padova Schioppa ha intenzione di inserire in finanziaria un provvedimento per l'agevolazione fiscale per incentivare i giovani a prendere casa in affitto. Il corriere riporta:

Il governo ha introdotto in Finanziaria la possibilità per i giovani, in un'età compresa tra i 20 e i 30 anni, di usufruire di detrazioni fiscali sugli affitti, sempre che la casa non sia l'abitazione principale dei genitori. La nuova detrazione varia dai 495,8 euro in tre anni se il reddito complessivo supera i 15.493,71 euro ma non i 30.987,41 euro, ai 991,6 euro (sempre in tre anni) se il reddito non supera i 15.493,71 euro.

La notizia per il Corriere è che la proposta è stata definita dal ministro una agevolazione per "mandare i bamboccioni fuori di casa". Tutta l'attenzione è dedicata all'uso del termine bamboccioni. Se solo i giornalisti sapessero fare il loro mestiere si sarebbero accorti che c'è qualcosa di molto più offensivo in questa proposta. Ok, ammetto che il concetto di divisione per un giornalista possa risultare difficile, ma io che ho studiato posso aiutarli... 991 euro / 3 anni = 330 euro all'anno. 330 euro / 12 mesi = 27.5 euro al mese.

1 DANNATO EURO AL GIORNO

Pensano di risolvere il problema degli affitti con un euro al giorno! La stupidità di questa proposta è disarmante... E' uno spreco si soldi immenso; per lo stato l'iniziativa in totale non avrà un costo trascurabile ma i benefici ai cittadini sono assolutamente trascurabili. So che non ci sono le risorse per risolvere il problema, ma proprio per questo non bisogna buttare via soldi. Era meglio tenere da parte quei soldi per migliorare il debito pubblico o se proprio ci si sentiva generosi organizzare una lotteria con in premio l'affitto per tre anni. Questa soluzione sicuramente non è egualitaria.
Ma è meglio una cosa utile per pochi, piuttosto che inutile per tutti.

Today the corriere reports that Minister Padova Schioppa is about to add to the budget law an article to help youngsters move out of their parents' houses. The corriere writes;

The budget law provides for a tax deduction for people between 20 and 30 years. The deduction ranges from 495.8 euros (in 3 years) for incomes above 15,493 euros per year to 991.6 euros (in 3 years) for incomes below 15,493 euros a year.

According to the Corriere the big piece of news here is that the minister called this bill "an incentive to send those mama boys out of their parents house". A big part of the paper is devoted to discuss the use of the word mama boy. If only journalists could do their job, they would have realize that there is something much more offensive hidden in that law. I don't expect journalists to grasp the concept of division, so I am going to help them on this... 991 euros / 3 years = 330 euros per year. 330 euros / 12 months = 27.5 euros a month.

1 DAMNED EURO A DAY

They think to solve the housing problem with one euro a day! My brain hurts... it is a huge waste of money. The State is going to give out a lot of money, but the benefits that people will get out of this are negligible. I know there are not enough resources to solve the problem, but because of that one should be careful in using the money indeed. It would have been better to use that money to improve the public debit, or if they really felt generous they should have put a lottery on. The prize being three years worth of rent. It is not egalitarian, but at least is useful.
I'd rather have something useful for a few than something useless of all.
