numeri - numbers (scroll down for english)

Ci sono tanti luoghi comuni sugli americani. Secondo me la sola idea di caratterizzare gli americani va contro il concetto stesso di Stati Uniti., ma nelle mie esperienze oltreoceano ho notato un particolare di cui non ho mai sentito parlare in Italia.

A me sembra interessante.

E' la familiarità degli americani con i numeri. Non intesi come matematica ma numeri usati come simboli grafici e la facilità con i quali li memorizzano. Questa mia riflessione è nata ieri al supermercato. Il banco della frutta e verdura funziona più o meno come in Italia. Prendi il prodotto, pesi il prodotto e schiacci il tastino corrispondente. In Italia sulle bilance c'è sempre il disegnino della verdura per ricordarti il numero e al più sono numeri di due cifre. Qui non è mica così facile, niente richiami mnemonici ma solo una tastiera e un display che ti ordina "inserire il codice prodotto". Codice prodotto che è lungo 6 cifre! E' stato quanto meno imbarazzante dover andare avanti e indietro dalla bilancia perchè mi dimenticavo il codice....

There are many common beliefs on the Americans. I think that the idea of tagging Americans is just agaist the idea of United States itself, but during my experiences across the pond I noticed a particular I have never heard about in Italy.

I think it is interesting.

It is the familiarity that Americans have with numbers. Numbers, not meaning Mathematics, just play symbols and the easiness with which they are memorized. I notice this thing yesterday while doing some grocery shopping. The produce is sold more or less as in Italy. I get what you want, you go to the scales, and get the ticket. In Italy scales have some visual reminders and the product code is at most a 2 digit number. Here is not that simple. No visual reminders, just the scale asking for the "product code". The product code is 6 digits long! It was embarassing, I had to go back and forth because I kept on forgetting the code!
