Speaking Science 2.0 (scroll down for English)

Ieri sera ho assistito a Speaking Science 2.0. Il tema era come comunicare la scienza al grande pubblico. Avrebbero dovuto esserci due fazioni. Una a favore del framing, ovvero adottare una strategia "pubblicitaria" basata su concetti semplici e ripetuti fino alla nausea e l'altra contraria a questa strategia. La cosa interessante è che una discussione che sui blog ha raggiunto livelli molto aspri, dal vivo è finita a tarallucci e vino. Con le due fazioni che dicevano "no hai ragione tu", "no, smettila hai ragione tu". Poi la notte è passata e il giorno dopo sui blog è ricominciato tutto "abbiamo vinto noi", "no stai zitto, abbiamo vinto noi". E' proprio vero che come dice John Gabriel nella sua teoria del "greater internet dickwad":



Comunque una delle citazioni più interessanti è stata:

il religioso si sveglia alla mattina e pensa "come posso convincere gli altri che quello che dico è vero". Lo scienziato perfetto si sveglia e pensa "come posso dimostrare che quello che ho detto ieri è falso"; lo scienziato vero si sveglia e pensa "come posso dimostrare che quello che ha detto LUI ieri è falso".

Yesterday night I attended Speaking Science 2.0. The conference was about how to get the science out to the large public. There should have been two sides. One for framing, a theory according to which scientists should use the same techniques of advertising, simplifying the concepts and hammering just a few of them into the public; the other side was supposed to be against this theory. The interesting thing is that the discussion reached quite violent peaks in the blogs, but yesterday they were all friendly and agreed on everything. "you are right!", "shut up! you are right!" And then this morning on the blogs they went on like "we won!" "no shut up! we won!" Scientifically speaking, this was a perfect example of John Grabriel's "greater internet dickwad theory":



Anyway one of the most interesting thing they said was

the minister wakes up every morning and thinks "how can I convince other people that what I say is the truth". The ideal scientist wakes up and thinks "how can I show that what I said yesterday is wrong" and the actual scientist think "how can I show that what HE said yesterday is wrong"
