num3ri - numb3rs (scroll down for English)

On one of my cards it said I had to find temperatures lower than -8. The numbers I uncovered were -6 and -7 so I thought I had won, and so did the woman in the shop. But when she scanned the card the machine said I hadn't.
I phoned Camelot and they fobbed me off with some story that -6 is higher - not lower - than -8 but I'm not having it.
Geniale il "I'm not having it"... lei non è mica così stupida da farsi fregare. Tina Farrel la sa lunga!

Today I found out that mathematical and scientific culture in Italy is not that bad. It is a sour-sweet feeling, though. In the United Kingdom there was a new scratchcard lottery. It is named Cool Cash. On each card there is a temperature and if you scratch lower temperatures you win. The problem is that temperatures can be negative; they had to withdraw the lottery because people could not understand that -7 is lower than -3.
One of the wanna-be winners says:
On one of my cards it said I had to find temperatures lower than -8. The numbers I uncovered were -6 and -7 so I thought I had won, and so did the woman in the shop. But when she scanned the card the machine said I hadn't.
I phoned Camelot and they fobbed me off with some story that -6 is higher - not lower - than -8 but I'm not having it.
I especially love the "I'm not having it"... she is not so stupid to be fooled. Tina Farrel knows better!

il peso dell'educazione - the burden of politeness (scroll down for english)

---

I think I have been well educated by my parents; they were always ready to rebuke me in case I did something wrong. I don't speak when I am chewing something, I alwasy keep my mouth shut when I chew, I try to minimize chewing and sipping noises and I never chew gum. All this small behavior are automatic to me now. Never would I have thought that my politeness would turn against me... Instead it happened. At work I share a cubicle with a Singaporean guy who didn't receive the same type of education I got, and as a consequences he always chews with his mouth open, when he drinks he makes sure everybody can hear his sipping noise and he is always chewing gum and making bubble. I cannot stand all these noises, but I cannot make them stop. There is nothing intrinsically wrong in chewing with one's mouth open; I was taught you don't do that. That's it.
If I had never been educated I could be happily sharing my cubicle with Paw, instead everytime he eats or drinks is a sort of torture to me.

cotta scientifica (versione gay) - scientific crush (gay edition)

"viene a vedere ci gira frogger".

The guy in the picture is Burt Rutan. He is not a scientist, but an engineer. An engineer like they are supposed to be, an innovator. His is the courage behind SpaceShipOne, the first civil vehicle which completed with success a suborbital flight. I have heard him at a conference. His a stubborn and a dreamer. He wants space flight to be a business and he's doing it. To those who ask him "why? just to send some billionaire in space?" he replies:
I bought my first apple computer in 1978, and I bought because I could say "i got a computer at my house and you don't" "what do you use it for?" "come over it does frogger".
Videogames gave birth to a industry that today we see as necessary.

Where are people like him in Italy? Where is our ability to dream? It is not matter of money, but how it is spent. Our history is full of dreamers and innovators, but also our recent past. Before WWII Italian aeronautical industry was one of the most advanced in the world, and now? I am not sure, but I suspect that the "State which takes good care of all us" has some responsibility. A safe job that we cannot lose, granted pension and universal health care... all these things killed our ability to risk. Without risk no great thing can be achieved.

Now things are changing, but we need to stop to be jealous of the past generation. We need to do our things our way.

I know that this is an oversimplification, but dreams must be simple.

strani doni - strange presents (scroll down for english)

Sure thing, there is a lot of weird people around, and you know this is a small world and the weather is not as it used to be. Here in Minneapolis I am renting a room in a big house. There are 5 people living in that house. N, the owner, 31 years old, his girlfriend C and other two people who don't belong to this story. N has the habit of picking up stuff, we drives around looking for abandoned stuff. This habit can be handy at times; the bike I am riding is made of different bikes that he "found". But sometime he crossed the limit. Yesterday N asked me if I could help him out unloading the car. Once we got to the car he proudly shew me a garden cart. A rusty garden cart with a deformed wheel. How lucky! I wish I had a garden cart! While I was helping him out with the cart he said "don't move that plastic bag, there is a dead bird inside". I must have given him a weird look because he felt obliged to explain himself: "yeah, it's a present for C" oohhhhh! now I wont' give you that weird look again! I wasn't brave enough to ask more.

It is not over yet, the dead bird is still there. Yesterday evening I went out with C and the bird was still there. I was in a box, if I had said anything I would have ruined the surprise.

Mastro di Chiavi - Master of Keys (scroll down for english)

Io sarei in panico.

Do you remember when your mum used to tell you "don't take things off the ground?" Well she was right! This morning I was biking to my office when a saw a little bag on the ground. Like the ones used to carry pens and school stuff. I got, it put it in my pocket and thought "I will take care of it when I get to the office". When I got to my office I found out that the bag was full of keys, dozens of them.
I thought I won a couple of pens, instead I won a mission. I cannot let it go, try to image how the person who lost all those keys must feel right now; I would be panicking.
The problem is that there is nothing useful in the bag, not a number, a name and address nothing! A few years ago there was this show on TV where the contestant had to find the owner of some found object; it is the same thing only more difficult and with no prize.

Different backgrounds (scroll down for english)

Ho taciuto. Non avrebbe apprezzato il paragone. Credo.

This afternoon I went out for a hot chocolate with my princess, one of her friends and her boyfriend, Alberto. We were chatting when Alberto mentioned this restaurant in Milan. He said that it was the birthplace of Emergency. Those words reminded me of Tun's Tavern, where on the 10th November, 1775 the United States Marine Corps was born. I didn't say anything. He wouldn't have appreciated the comparison. I believe.
