Il laureato - The Graduate (scroll down for english)

Ieri si è laureato il mio primo tesista. Ho così potuto partecipare a una sessione di laurea dall'altra parte - dalla parte della commissione. Ho avuto nuovamente conferma che ormai le università italiane sono diventate dei diplomifici. Il candidato aveva venti minuti per discutere il suo lavoro e la commissione ascoltava distrattamente. 7 candidati in una mattina. Dopo ogni candidato 3 minuti di discussione per decidere il voto. Questo va sicuramente bene agli studenti mediocri, ma è estremamente morficante per gli studenti più brillanti che si vedono comparare ai mediocri. E così, dopo la riforma, anche il sistema universitario si è allineato a tutti gli altri settori dell'Italia: appiattimento culturale, premiare il mediocre e mortificare l'eccellente. Come che essere migliori di altri sia una colpa. La cosa più dannosa è che il mediocre si crede eccellente perchè si è laureato con 110 e lode, senza rendersi conto che ormai quel voto non conta più nulla.

Yesterday my first student defended his masters' thesis. So I had the chance to attended a thesis defense on the other side, the committee's side. I had the clear feeling that Italian Universities have just become a degree assembly line: the student gets in, stays there for 5 years and no matter what he or she does the student gets out on the other end with his degree.
Each candidate had 20 minutes to discuss his thesis and the committee wasn't paying too much attention; after all they had 7 candidates in a morning. After each candidate there were 3 minutes to decide the final grade.
This is surely good for mediocre students, but it is very mortifying for good students that are given the same attention that was given to bad students. And so, after the reform, Italian Universities have become like many other things in Italy: culturally flattening, reward the mediocrity and mortify the excellence. As if being better than others were a guilt. The most dangerous thing is that students don't get this and the obtuse student believes is a genius because he graduates cum laude, without realizing that that grade doesn't mean anything anymore.
