1 euro (scroll down for English)

Today the corriere reports that Minister Padova Schioppa is about to add to the budget law an article to help youngsters move out of their parents' houses. The corriere writes;
The budget law provides for a tax deduction for people between 20 and 30 years. The deduction ranges from 495.8 euros (in 3 years) for incomes above 15,493 euros per year to 991.6 euros (in 3 years) for incomes below 15,493 euros a year.

According to the Corriere the big piece of news here is that the minister called this bill "an incentive to send those mama boys out of their parents house". A big part of the paper is devoted to discuss the use of the word mama boy. If only journalists could do their job, they would have realize that there is something much more offensive hidden in that law. I don't expect journalists to grasp the concept of division, so I am going to help them on this... 991 euros / 3 years = 330 euros per year. 330 euros / 12 months = 27.5 euros a month.

1 DAMNED EURO A DAY

They think to solve the housing problem with one euro a day! My brain hurts... it is a huge waste of money. The State is going to give out a lot of money, but the benefits that people will get out of this are negligible. I know there are not enough resources to solve the problem, but because of that one should be careful in using the money indeed. It would have been better to use that money to improve the public debit, or if they really felt generous they should have put a lottery on. The prize being three years worth of rent. It is not egalitarian, but at least is useful.
I'd rather have something useful for a few than something useless of all.

e gli ingegneri? - what about the engineers? (scroll down for English)

Ieri sono finalmente riuscito ad andare a vedere "in the shadow of the moon".

Yesterday I finally watched "in the shadow of the moon"; the documentary produced by Ron Howard on th Apollo porgram. I had some difficulties because the movie opened a month later in Minneapolis and only in one movie theater. The movie is great. I found it moving, but again I am an engineer. I have always regretted being born to late to witness the landing on the moon and too early, I fear, to witness the human landing on any other planet (I may be in time for the return to the moon). Apollo footage on the silver screen is amazing; the sharp horizon dividing the bright moon and the dark space is astonishing.

I have only one critique; the protagonists of the movie are the astronauts with their stories and feelings. It almost seems that, thank to their hard training and iron will, the simply jumped on the moon. One, two three.. hop! The amazing engineering feat remains untold and untouched. It is a pity, I would have loved to hear what engineers have to tell about the program. Often the Saturn V is referred to as a liquid hydrogen rocket; this definition is not precise for the Apollo program they had an additive for the hydrogen: testosterone. Although testosterone was provide for by the astronauts, everything else was built by engineers.

Many things changed. In less than 10 years they were able to go from not having put anyone on orbit to sending men to the moon. Without knowing what they had to face. Now NASA panics for a chipped tile.

Speaking Science 2.0 (scroll down for English)

Ieri sera ho assistito a Speaking Science 2.0.

---

Yesterday night I attended Speaking Science 2.0. The conference was about how to get the science out to the large public. There should have been two sides. One for framing, a theory according to which scientists should use the same techniques of advertising, simplifying the concepts and hammering just a few of them into the public; the other side was supposed to be against this theory. The interesting thing is that the discussion reached quite violent peaks in the blogs, but yesterday they were all friendly and agreed on everything. "you are right!", "shut up! you are right!" And then this morning on the blogs they went on like "we won!" "no shut up! we won!" Scientifically speaking, this was a perfect example of John Grabriel's "greater internet dickwad theory":

Anyway one of the most interesting thing they said was
the minister wakes up every morning and thinks "how can I convince other people that what I say is the truth". The ideal scientist wakes up and thinks "how can I show that what I said yesterday is wrong" and the actual scientist think "how can I show that what HE said yesterday is wrong"

the pillowman (scroll down for English)

Once upon a time, there was a man, who did not look like normal men. He was about nine feet tall and he was all made up of these fluffy pink pillows: his arms were pillows and his legs were pillows and his body was a pillow; his fingers were tiny little pillows, even his head was a pillow, a big round pillow. And on his head he had two button eyes and a big smiley mouth which was always smiling, so you could always see his teeth, which was also pillows. little white pillows. Well, the Pillowman had to look like this, he had to look soft and safe, because of his job, because his job was a very sad and a very difficult one... Whenever a man or a lady was very very sad because they'd had a dreadful and hard life and they just wanted to end it all, they just wanted to take their own lives and take all the pain away, well, just as they were about to do it, by razor, or by bullet, or by gas, by whatever preferred method of suicide, the Pillow man would go to them, and sit with them, and gently hold them, and he'd say, "Hold on a minute," and time would slow strangely, and as time slowed, the Pillowman would go back in time to when that man or that lady was just a little boy or a little girl, to when the life of horror they were to lead hadn't quite yet begun, and the Pillowman's job was very very sad, because the Pillowman's job was to get that child to kill themselves, and so avoid the years of pain that would just end up in the same place for them anyway: facing an oven, facing a shotgun, facing a lake. "But I've never heard of a small child killing themselves," you might say. Well the Pillowman would always suggest they do it in a way that would just look like a tragic accident: He'd show them the bottle of pills that looked just like sweeties; he'd show them the place on the river where the ice was too thin; he'd show them the parked cars that it was really dangerous to dart out between; he'd show them the plastic bag with no breathing holes, and exactly how to tighten it. Because mummies and daddies always find it easier to come to terms with a five-year-old lost in a tragic accident then thy do with a five-year-old who has seen how shitty life is and taken action to avoid it. Now, not all the children would go along with the Pillowman. There was one little girl, a happy little thing, who just wouldn't believe the Pillowman when he told her that life could be awful and her life would be, and she sent him away, and he went away crying, crying big gloopy tears that made puddles this big, and the next night there was another knock on her bedroom door, and she said, "Go away, Pillowman, I've told you, I'm happy. I've always been happy and I'll always be happy." But it wasn't the Pillowman. It was another man. And her mummy wasn't home, and this man would visit her every time her mummy wasn't home, and she soon became very very sad, and as she sat in front of the oven when she was twenty-one she said to the Pillowman, "Why didn't you try to convince me?" and the Pillowman said, "I tried to convince you, but you were just too happy." And as she turned on the gas as high as it would go she said, "But I've never been happy. I've never been happy." See, when the Pillowman was successful in his work, a little child would die horrifically. And when the Pillowman was unseccessful, a little child would have a horrific life, grow into an adult who'd also have a horrific life, and then die horrifically. So, the Pillowman, as big as he was and as fluffy as he was, he'd just go around crying all day long, his house'd be just puddles everywhere so he decided to do just one final job and that'd be it. So he went to this place beside this pretty stream that he remembered from a time before, and he brought a little can a petrol with him, and there was this old weeping willow tree there, and he went under it and he sat and he waited there a while, and there were all these little toys under there. There was a little car and a little toy dog that yapped and a kaleidoscope. There was a little caravan nearby, and the Pillowman heard the door open and little footsteps come out, and he heard a boy's voice say, "I'm just going out to play, Mum," and the mum said, "Well don't be late for your tea, son." "I won't be, Mum." And the Pillowman heard the little footsteps get closer and the branches of the willow tree parted and it wasn't a little boy at all, it was a little Pillowboy. and the Pillowboy said, "Hello," to the Pillowman, and the Pillowman said, "Hello," to the Pillowboy, and they both played with the toys for a while, and the Pillowman told him all about his sad job and the dead kids and all of that type of stuff, and the little Pillowboy understood instantly 'cos he was such a happy little fella and all he ever wanted to do was to be able to help people, and he poured the can of petrol all over himself and his smiley mouth was still smiling, and the Pillowman, through his gloopy tears, said, "Thank you," to the Pillowboy, and the Pillowboy said, "That's alright. Will you tell my mummy I won't be having my tea tonight," and the Pillowman said, "Yes, I will," lying, and the Pillowboy struck a match, and the Pillowman sat there watching him burn, and as the Pillowman gently started to fade away, the last thing he saw was he Pillowboy's happy smiley mouth as it slowly melted away, stinking into nothingness. That was the last thing he say. The last thing he heard was something he hadn't even contemplated. The last thing he heard was the screams of the hundred thousand children he'd helped to commit suicide coming back to life and going on to lead the cold, wretched lives that were destined to them because he hadn't been around to prevent them, right on up to the screams of their sad self-inflicted deaths, which this time, of course, would be conducted entirely alone.

Effettivamente avevo sottovalutato l'opera.

L'ho scelto io.

Ah dimenticavo, l'opera è the pillowman di Martin McDonagh. :-)

---

I underestimated the play. They did a lot more than saying "poop". Let's just say that at the beginning of the second act a 5 years old is crucified, on stage. I don't want to tell you anything else because you have to go and see the play if you have the chance. It is violent and disturbing but in a genious way. The piece at the beginning of my post is one of the stories that are told during the 2 hours and 50 minutes of the play. And this is one of the brightest stories. All the others are even darker. All the play is dark. Maybe this is the reason I loved it.

Ariel, cut the story of your difficult childhood. My father was an abusive alcoholist, did I become a abusive alcoholist myself?

YES! but this has nothing to do with my father, it was my choice!

Almost forgot, the play is "the pillowman" by Martin McDonagh.

chiudete la fogna - shut the fuck up (scroll down for English)

Condoms are not sure because I know that there are two countries in Europe, they are making condoms with the virus on purpose. They want to finish with the African people. This is the programme. They want to colonise until up to now. If we are not careful we will finish in one century's time

---

And we allow to people like this scumbag to influence or politics... may Italians deserve it, but I don't.
The Archbishop Maputo Francisco Chimoio head of the Catholic Church in Mozambique, let me repeat it, head of the Catholic Church, not a random guy, but an archbishop appointed by the Vatican said:

Condoms are not sure because I know that there are two countries in Europe, they are making condoms with the virus on purpose. They want to finish with the African people. This is the programme. They want to colonise until up to now. If we are not careful we will finish in one century's time

Attaboy! Catholics... and don't come and tell me that being Catholics does not mean to believe this things because it does!. The Catholic Church has a precise hierarchy and precise rules and dogma... you want to believe in god, christ, Santa Claus and the tooth fairy? great, do it, but if you claim you are catholic then you are supporting this politcs.

agopuntura - acupuncture (scroll down for English)

---

Acupunture's rationale is that all diseases are caused by unbalanced energy (or chi); according to this theory in order to treat all dieseaes it is enought to restablish balance in the chi. This can be achieved by sticking needles in specific points where the chi accumulates. Recently a group of German researchers published a study [1] that suggest acupuncture works better than official medicine. I should be more precise and write that the media think that the study suggest that.

Needles 'are best for back pain', they say.

The reality is that, although this study shows that acupuncture had a success rate of 46% while official medicine only of 26%, the numbers don't allow us to compare acupuncture against official medicine.
To understand the issue we need to dwell on the details; after all science is a rigorous method and details are important, right?
1162 subjects took part to the study; they all suffered from chronic back pain. They have been divided into three groups: the first one was treated with official medicine, the second one with traditional acupuncture and the third one with "sham" acupuncture which basically consists of sticking needles at random without aiming for the "chi points".
The only definitive conclusion that the study allows to draw is that classical acupuncture and sham acupuncture have the same rate of success, meaning that the chi theory is not true. The subjects were aware of what kind of treatment they were subjected to; it was not a blind trial and therefore the study doesn't allow to rule out effects such as placeo
bo and other conditioning. Conclusions on the differences between the two forms of acupuncture are licit because the subjects were not able to tell which kind of acupuncture they were getting.

This story shows that journalists are not able to treat scientific subjects. Journalists have the duty to (in)form their readers, but I have already shown that they are not up to the role. Public opinion is scientifically ignorant and this has serious consequences.

The scientific paper has been (more thoroughly) commented also by:
Steve Novella
Orac
Ben Goldrace
and then they say that blogs are not dependable...

ragionamenti - reasoning (scroll down for English)

I ragazzini fanno cose stupide.

---

Yesterday a kid was hospitalized as a result of trying swallow a fishing buoy. He did it because he was dared by a a group of his peers. They said "swallow it or you are queer". A serious act of bullying. The problem is Grillini; he commented on this fact saying "we need to stop homophobia in classrooms". Don't get me wrong, Italy is a homophobic country, but this fact is not related to homophobia. Do you remember "back to the future"? Marty ended up in troubles because Biff used to dare him saying "do it or you are a chicken". Did we used to be chickenphobic? I don't think so. Kids do stupid things. He would have swallowed the buoy even if they had said "swallow or you are a coward". It is bullying not homophobia.
Grillini's reasoning shows that when you get to the right conclusion through a fallacious reasoning you are weakening your stance. People will think that since you cannot find a better argument you are wrong and the problem does not exist.

un anno in anticipo - a year early (scroll down for English)

---

Something more that a year ago I commented on the general pardon approved by the Italian Parliament. I explained why it was stupid and useless and I wrote these words:
If we admit there is a problem, and there is a problem, it is never a good idea to face it pretending it's not there, or, if we are lucky treating the symptoms. In this way in a couple of years we will be in the same situation as before. It isn't that difficult to understand, is it?
I was wrong! Terribly wrong! We didn't have to wait two years! One was enough. Italian prisons are again full. Now what? another pardon? I wouldn't be surprised if somebody came forward with that idea again. Luckily this time we have the nazipope influencing Italian politics and I don't think he will push for pardon.

in sciopero - on strike (scroll down for english)

Evviva i sindacati!

---

The workers of the University of Minnesota have been on strike for two weeks now. Every morning I see them walking con the sidewalk with their sign and their whistles. I haven't followed the issue and I don't know why they are on strike and honestly I don' t care. What I find amusing are the differences between USA and Italy. Have you ever heard of someone being on strike for two weeks in Italy? Two weeks without wages? are you kidding? it is easier to occupy a highway, a train station, or harass in any other way people who don't have any role in the negotation for half a day. The State will intervene and the worker will obtain what they want without losing to much money. Hooray for the Labor Unions. I wonder why they don't do the same here... or right if they did something like that, they would be arrested,

cacca - poop (scroll down for english)

You should know that this is considered a very fine but extremely “edgy” and “disturbing” play. I’ve not read it, but I think sex and violence are its themes

---

One of the good things about having a roommates who work at the Guthrie is that she has access to employee discounts and free tickets. Today she wrote asking if I wanted to see The Pillowman. I said yes. I don't have the slightest idea of what play it is, but it is theater, it is the Guthrie and it's free. The thing is that Denise felt the necessity to warn me:
You should know that this is considered a very fine but extremely “edgy” and “disturbing” play. I’ve not read it, but I think sex and violence are its themes
If I knew "the americans" they are going to say the word poop...
