le dimensioni contano - dimensions do matter (scroll down for english)

Fin qui i fatti.

---

If I ever teach Physics 101, I will begin my first lecture with the following phrase: "dimension do matter". It is one of thos phrases that stays in the mind of the students, and most of all it is true. Knowing Physics may make the difference between ending up with a decent job and being an Italian Journalis.
In the last few days I read a couple of article from Corriere della Sera (one of the two most important newspaper in Italy). The former is The electric car that runs faster than supercars by Alessandra Carboni and the latter is «So long, paparazzi». Vacations on a submarine by Paolo Beltramin. The first paper is about an electric car and the author writes that
In urban driving cycle, the car consumes 200 watt per hour.
Holy cow! This car really consumes nothing! In fact watt per hour is nothing! Dimensionally speaking power/time is nothing, it may be considered as a sort of energy acceleration but I have never seen that used.
The second paper is about a submarine; originally the article was published with a schematics of the vehicle. In the schematics, it was reported that the submarine is equipped with "ABS brakes". Arrr! what's the use for ABS brakes when submarines don't have wheels? A quick check on the official website of the manufacturing company reveals that indeed they mention ABS, but it is a certification and ABS stands for American Bureau of Shipping. The author didn't fell like wasting time to get the truth, after all he ain't no freakin' rocket scientist, just a journalist.

To this points just facts. Yes I know I am tedious... these little mistakes do not change the meaning of the news. But there is only one little problem. Newspapers are supposed to inform, but how can I trust them to learn things that I don't know when every time I read a paper on some topics that I know I find mistakes? I cannot. Here is not a matter of objectivity; it is just plain incompetence. The people who are supposed to form the public opinion are often incompetent. And public opinion do matter in democracy.

Shame on them, If I were an Italian journalist I would burn the part.... emmmhhh professional order membership card.

malattia - sick day (scroll down for english)

---

Today it's 96 degrees with a humidity of 50%. I could use some snow. It is saturday afternoon there is a city to explore and I am stuck at home because it is too warm outside. So I think.

In Italy you hear people talking about the US job market as a ruthless one (I prefer the word competitive) all the time. Seen from Europe it is, but often we forget to re-equilibrate our judgment. It is easy to lose one's job, but it is easy to find a new one. There is no universal health care, but wages are slightly higher. At the University of Minnesota, the same position that would pay 1500 euros a month in Italy, pays 5000 dollars a month. The health insurance is 150$, I'd rather subtract 150$ from a 5000$ stipend than subtract 0 euros from 1500 euros and have to wait months for a x-ray. The key word is as usual I'd rather; it is a personal choice, not the revealed truth.
These were known things, I just added some numbers.
Yesterday I found out something new. How sick days work. It is more or less as with paid vacations; for each hour of work you get a number (which depends on the contract) of minutes of sick days (besides paid vacation). Once you run out of sick day... that's it. You don't get paid.

I can hear you yelling... sick days are a right! one must have the right to be sick....

At first that was my reaction too; but then I noticed that there is another option (besides private insurances). Your co workers can give you their unused sick days. Think about it: it is the same thing that happens in Italy, with one small difference. Sick days of one person are paid by the rest of us; when someone gets sick, INPS pays his stipend. Where do you think that money comes from?. From everybody else and from the sick person too. The difference is that in Italy nobody asks you if you want to help that person or what. In the USA you can choose. You can choose to donate your sick days to that person who called in sick for days and days with no reason or to the other person who worked hard all the time and got seriously ill.
I call this freedom of choice.
I realize that many won't agree with this system. It is not the right system. It is just a system among the others. A system that I like.

numeri - numbers (scroll down for english)

A me sembra interessante.

---

There are many common beliefs on the Americans. I think that the idea of tagging Americans is just agaist the idea of United States itself, but during my experiences across the pond I noticed a particular I have never heard about in Italy.

I think it is interesting.

It is the familiarity that Americans have with numbers. Numbers, not meaning Mathematics, just play symbols and the easiness with which they are memorized. I notice this thing yesterday while doing some grocery shopping. The produce is sold more or less as in Italy. I get what you want, you go to the scales, and get the ticket. In Italy scales have some visual reminders and the product code is at most a 2 digit number. Here is not that simple. No visual reminders, just the scale asking for the "product code". The product code is 6 digits long! It was embarassing, I had to go back and forth because I kept on forgetting the code!

anche gli americani non pagano le tasse - Americans don't pay taxes either (scroll down for english)

Sono risorto! Alleluja! E' vero ci ho messo un po' più di tre giorni. Lo so, lo so... sto ancora imparando. Perdonatemi.

A presto

---

I am resurrected! Alleluja! It is true. I took more than 3 days; I know I know, I am still learning. Forgive me. From now on I will try to write more often. The big piece of news is that I am in Minneapolis! I am going to be here for the next 4 months and a half. Today I moved in with the new roommates. They are nice and friendly. The house is big and nice. Dirty and messy. But what am I here for? I would feel useless otherwise. I asked the landlord how we are going to do with the rent. He said that he'd rather get paid cash "mainly for tax reasons". And so Americans don't pay taxes either. Speaking of taxes, I finally found out why I paid almost 60% of taxes on my last research contract. It was a 8 month worth of work. Those geniuses at the payroll office made it looks like I earn that money every month! So the Italian IRS said "mmm look at how much money this grad student makes, let's tax him hard". The Italian IRS reasoned correctly.

I took the picture yesterday. I don't think I'll go to heaven (it doesn't even exist in my opinion) but the point is: if who gave me the brochure is sure is going to heaven, isn't that pride (a capital sin)?

OK, il prezzo è giusto! - OK, the price is right ( scroll down for English)

Secondo voi i Talebani come useranno questi soldi e/o prigionieri?

---

Sorry for the silence, I have been very busy these months. Today I am going to take some minutes off. I need to talk.
I would like to talk about Mastrogiacomo's kidnapping and about the ongoing negotiation. Yesterday Italy's foreign minister said:
We met all their conditions for Mastrogiacomo's release.

Man! This is called negotiation! with a blindfold. Obviously we will never know what these conditions exactly are. But let's try to do an educated guess. I don't think its a life long stock of Parmesan cheese, nor Andriano Celentano's and Claudia Mori's autographs. I believe it is one of the tow: money, prisoners exchange.
How do you think the Talebans will use this money or persons? I don't think they will retire at the Bahamas not that they requested the release of some innocent guy They must have asked for someone important to them.
Are we sure that this is what we want? After all in Afghanistan there are only a few hundreds Italian soldiers and I think they could use some more, better equipped, Talibans to fight.
Ehi! we are "the Italians", we are right and fair, we negotiate with everybody, but most of all we are intellectually short sighted, we cannot iterate more that two cause-effect steps.
We are not the evil Americans. They do not negotiate with kidnappers. They plan rescue missions. It's risky business, but you exactly know what is at the stakes. You are putting into play the kidnapped and the rescue team, nothing more, nothing less. You are in control. When you give kidnappers what they want you lose control; you will never know what you really gave them.
Cynical? Damn, yes. Does It work? Damn yes!
Obviously to hope that some journalist would make his/her readers do this kind of reasoning would be to much. After all Mastrogiacomo is one of them.

Cose da non fare - Things not to be done (scroll down for english)

---

Probably my English reader will not take too much advantage from this piece of advice , but I am trying to keep this blog as international as possible. If you are holding a lecture in Italian in front of a hundred engineering students, never ever say anything that would sound like
if we excite the system with a sine

The thing is that sine in Italian is seno which also means breast. It is risky business to say something like that in front of engineers. Trust me, I am one of them...

Mastro di Chiavi - Master of Keys (scroll down for english)

Io sarei in panico.

---

Do you remember when your mum used to tell you "don't take things off the ground?" Well she was right! This morning I was biking to my office when a saw a little bag on the ground. Like the ones used to carry pens and school stuff. I got, it put it in my pocket and thought "I will take care of it when I get to the office". When I got to my office I found out that the bag was full of keys, dozens of them.
I thought I won a couple of pens, instead I won a mission. I cannot let it go, try to image how the person who lost all those keys must feel right now; I would be panicking.
The problem is that there is nothing useful in the bag, not a number, a name and address nothing! A few years ago there was this show on TV where the contestant had to find the owner of some found object; it is the same thing only more difficult and with no prize.

Minneapolis (scroll down for english)

---

The fog on my future is lifting, yesterday evening I found out that prof. Gary Balas accepted to host me in his group at University of Minnesota for 4-6 months. I am going to leave in June for the beloved USA! Yippie! Just a little problem, now I got only 6 months to do eveything I was planning to do at Politecnico in one year. I have to take at least 5 exams and finish my minor research topic, obviously in the meantime I have to continue working on my thesis and study all Balas' papers (it wouldn't be nice of me to work with someone without knowing everything he wrote, right?)
