Ricerche Sociali - Social Research (scroll down for english)

Yesterday evening I went for a drink with an old friend of mine. He's one of the smartest guy I have ever met. Among other topics we discussed about work. My friend g. works for a big company that runs marketing and social researches e he told me about their latest advancements. He told me about a particular project named media monitor. The more he told me about that the more it seemed to be between surreal and scary. Unfortunately he is not assigned to that particular project so I lack the technical details but the basic idea is as follows. Provide a certain number of volunteers of a device as big as an i-pod that continually record sounds and noises, moreover it is equipped with a bar code reader and the user is supposed to scan every paper or magazine he reads. Meanwhile, back at the headquarters of the Umbrella Corporation (I think it all comes down to that) they continually record the audio from all major TV and radio stations. Periodically the data stored on the device are uploaded to the HQ where they can create a map of every radio station or TV channel that the user has listened to or watched, plus all the magazines he supposedly read. The goal of the project is to provide a better system than Auditel which has many defects.
The whole story scares me, it is probably an unmotivated scare since the subjects volunteer for it, but nevertheless it is scaring. On the other hand I am a geek first and a person then, so I have also this insane technical curiosity.
Once I got used to the scare feeling I started to think about it. My friend g. claims that the subjects are chosen so to be a representative sample of the society. My question is: can it be a real representative sample? Isn't it the case that they only represent people who wants to be spied on 24/7? I suspect/hope that a person who wants to be spied on is deeply different from me.
